What is Japanese Red Oak?
- The Red Oak Wood used for Japanese Bokken, also called 'Akagashi', greatly differs from the Red Oak Wood referred to when speaking about North American Bokken.
- While the North American Oak and Japanese Oak are related, the Japanese Oak tree is evergreen, due to this it does not have a conspicuous open grain like the American White and Red Oak.
- The open grain structure, of the American Oak wood produces soft areas which are more prone to impact damage.
- Akagashi on the other hand has a structure that is uniformly hard, has excellent dent resistance and has better impact strength than American Oaks.
- Nowadays Akagashi is a quite rare and expensive even in Japan, and is mostly used for making high quality Bokken or Jo.

Luckily I found them at 10Kya. I've no way of knowing whether they are made by Tozando as there are no other listings on the Internet and neither is there any branding on the Nunchaku. It definitely has some Japanese text on the sticker which translates to...
"Nunchakus are the culmination of Karate's self-defense, and should never be used for attacks. If you break this ban, you will hurt others and destroy yourself. (From the All Japan Karatedo Federation)" All Japan Arms Federation
I love this pair even though there are some minor imperfections where the slot is cut without which it would have received 5 stars, I have no way of knowing whether this is Akagashi as I've never seen this wood before. It is beautiful and surpringly light. I'm hoping they were made by one of those remaining schools. Of course, it could also have been made by some guy with a router, a drill and a piece of red Oak. I guess I'll have to live with the mystery. This was a wonderful purchase which I don't regret. (Posted on 9/7/19)
