About Tant Saree

'Tant sarre'.. A very beautiful creation of our own West Bengal! It is a traditional Indian saree usually used by Bengali Women and no-a-days by most of the women in India as it is the most suitable for Indian hot and humid climate. Most comfortable to wear because of its lightness and transparency.

Origin

Tant saree are traditionally made by the weavers from all over West Bengal and Bangladesh but typically from some places like Murshidabad, Nadia, Hoogly of Weat Bengal and Dhaka, Tangail of Bangladesh are famous for tant saree weaving.

How They Are Made

Weaving of tant saree is famous and a very old crafting of West Bengal and Bangladesh.Tant saree are woven from light cotton threads. The craftsmen dexterously weave the cotton to thread which is woven to tant saree. Two shuttles are used for doing this. Traditionally, handlooms were used by the weavers, today they have been largely replaced by power looms and other machinery to weave these sarees.

Characteristics

Tant saree is typically characterised by a broad and thick boarder and decorative pallu. It is woven using a variety of floral, a distinctive pattern of curved feather shaped figure based on Indian pine-cone art, geometric, figures relating Indian culture, mythologies, and recently even modern art are depicted in the saree. There is huge vareity in printed, hand painted and embroidered patterns.
