Fundamentals Of Shirt Care

Shirts reflect your personality. It is of no use wearing a branded or high quality shirt unless it is clean, tidy and ironed. But don't worry we are here to help you...

Washing

We always get this advise to put shirts in a pillow case before washing. This helps to protect fabrics against excessive wear and tear the washing machines. Some people recommend turning the shirt inside out. Neither of these things are absolutely necessary.

Pre-treat any stains by carefully working a little detergent into them or spot cleaning by a stain remover pen.

Set up your washing machine as per the material of your shirt. If your shirt is a lightweight or for a special occasion. Use the delicate cycle. If your shirt is for regular use or particularly dirty then you can go for a normal cycle.

For light colours we can use hot water but for dark colours we should use lukewarm or cold water because there is a risk of colour fading.

Use good quality detergent and be sure it is not a chlorine based detergent because it leads to the discolouration of the shirt.

The shirts get crumbled in the washing machines so you have to remove the wrinkles promptly before they get dry.

Ironing

It is always good to take shirt when it is damp. It can be ironed with a minimum effort. If the shirt is too dry, you must dampen it thoroughly with water with the help of spray bottle.

Keep the dampened shirt for half an hour in a plastic bag to distribute the moisture evenly through the cloth.

Start with the sleeves. Begin ironing in the middle of the sleeve. Iron from the center outward, otherwise light creases will be pressed into the material. Only iron the folds at the end.

Place the back of the shirt with the inside down on the ironing board. Pull the shirt tight and iron it smooth. Back pleat must be ironed evenly.

Iron the collar from the tips in so that no creases in the material are left on the outside. Turn the collar over and iron it on the inside. .It is not necessary to iron the fold of the collar.

Now iron the front portion of the shirt. Iron both the halves separately. Iron carefully around the buttons.

It is best to keep shirts hanging up. If you want to store them after ironing fold them nicely and keep them in the clean place.
